Private Dancer

"The [NUS] festival kicks off with Overdrive: A Triple Bill on March 14 and 15. One of the pieces is Private Dancer, a dance production by award-winning Israeli dancer-choreographer Idan Cohen that deals with the consuming pressure that we face daily.

"If you look at ads on the television or magazines, you're constantly told how white your teeth need to be, how you're supposed to smell, what your weight needs to be, and we all struggle with that," he said.

And this pressure seeps into the world of dance as well, with dancers expected to act and look a certain way. "We still use people as objects, as something that we consume - even at the cultural level. People are here to entertain or cause pleasure," said Cohen.
